We're making a case for the fifth wall. A statement ceiling can entirely transform a space—and instantly make it feel unique and memorable. Ceilings are becoming key components of architectural and design schemes in the same way as walls, floors and furnishings. Using a wallpaper on your ceiling will create a dramatic look whilst being easy to install and remove.
Any room — from the bathroom to the kid’s bedroom — can benefit from the playful update a graphic wallpaper adds. Think of your ceiling as the ultimate blank canvas. Adding a pattern can be really cool, like a faux marble paper, applied between molding on a ceiling. It will add grandeur and an old-world ambiance while retaining its fresh appeal. Too often overlooked, and just painted white, ceilings are a great “fifth wall” for out-there ideas, So live a little and put some wallpaper on your ceiling.
Trends are cyclical, and it seems that even the most outrageous ones find a way of coming back in vogue. Memphis design with its loud colours and zany patterns, once laughed off as one of many bad decisions made in the 1980s, have come sneaking back into interiors. The Memphis movement was originally initiated by Ettore Sottsass in the 80s, who gathered a group of fellow designers with a vision to start a revolution against the sober and functional ear of modernist design. They took their name from a Bob Dylan song titled Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again which was played on repeat during their first meeting. The Milan-based Memphis Group went on to develop one of the most recognisable styles of the late 20th century.
